RFQ preparation
Ask suppliers to solve the right unknowns.
An early RFQ does not need every production detail finalized. It does need enough product intent and commercial context for the supplier to understand what is fixed and what they are being asked to propose.
Define before RFQ where possible
- Product purpose and key user-facing constraints
- Critical dimensions/interfaces already known
- Material/finish directions you actually own
- Target quantity or quotation volume
- Market/safety constraints already identified
Explicitly ask the supplier
- Recommended manufacturing process
- Material grade/thickness proposal where not yet engineered
- Critical tolerances and DFM concerns
- Prototype assumptions and tooling requirements
- MOQ, lead time and commercial quotation
